You
might think that this is some sort of WWII Scottish piper in some funny
colours, and you'd be right. The mini is a
WWII piper, but painted in the colours of the Manchester Guard.

You'll
notice that the bagpipes have no tartan. This is partly because he
isn't a Scottish piper (not that pre-fall polities have any meaning) but
mostly because I'm lazy.
So
why bagpipes? Why not bagpipes? In my opinion they are the premier
battlefield portable instrument, producing a cadence that is both
uplifting and driving enough to make you want to plunge a bayonet into

It was something of an experience coming back to my baby after almost a year.

Xanders plan was simple, drive at my forces and murder me in melee. My plan was likewise simple; gun them down before they got to me. This may be the first time that the obvious dichotomy between the two forces has been explicitly exploited, with previous players trying to set up firing lines or making extensive use of cover.

The nomads did manage to hide from the majority of my fire-power admittedly, except for the spear-men who were wiped out in pretty short order.
So while the rules still haven't been written we've already identified a number of changes that need to be made. As I've been thinking for a while, suppression is way too clunky. Armour should probably be rolled into one check, rather than having separate checks for different classes of weapons. And as I've been suspecting for a while, the forces we have are relatively well balanced, despite the Horde being, on paper, significantly more expensive; the price of firearms definitely needs to go up.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable afternoon, with actual positive feedback. Watch this space; I hope to get an actual ruleset finished by the end of the year.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-14314807430695156512016-08-31T22:47:00.002+01:002016-08-31T22:49:58.807+01:00All That Remains at IPMS ThornburyA much delayed post about ATR at IPMS Thornbury last month.

Painting wise I'm going to be focusing on other projects for a while, mostly Flames of War, 6mm modern, other Post apocalyptic stuff and misc. RPG models, but I'll get back to the coalition after the break. I've got extra figures for the Cartel, to bulk out their squad and I want to put together a second rifle squad for the Manchester Guard - after finding a less labour intensive manufacture process of course!

I also want to expand the HQ selection for the guard.I've got a flag for a standard bearer all lined up, and one of the takeaways I forgot to mention in the last post is that you need a robust command structure or a good counter-sniper setup. Otherwise your going to have a bad time.

The obvious goal for now is the rules. I think I'm going to need another two months or so.

I will, however, be uploading a pdf of the Fog of War cards this weekend.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-9317782048360910552016-04-26T20:15:00.000+01:002016-04-26T20:57:00.514+01:00Salute roundupSalute was certainly an experience.

The support from various friends and acquaintances was outstanding and I never found myself there alone.

I managed to run two games and get a small amount of time to look around the show myself. Interest from the public was muted but constant and I managed to give out a reasonable amount of cards.

It was also a learning experience as far as the game was concerned, especially as this was the first time it had been played.

Both games were rather a-typical however.

The first resulted in a the slaughter of the coalition, with minimal horde casualties, but this may have been compounded by the fact that my lovely assistant had a rather liberal interpretation of 6" and seemed to have trouble understanding the phrase "no doubling through terrain". I let this slide as I didn't want to start being belligerent that early into the game. Adding to this, his young opponent seemed to have a rather lax grasp on tactics in general and managed to wander his cavalry into charge range for the Karns command group.

The second was a complete reversal, with the horde being mowed down while charging SMG armed veterans across open ground. Apparently, early on, the players mistook me saying "no doubling through ruins" as "no moving through ruins" and thus they proceeded to manoeuvre down the fire-lanes recently constructed by my assistant in a rookie table dressing error.

Despite this there were some useful takeaways. The Sentry special rule is under-pointed, as is off map mortar support and off map sniper support. In fact, the ability to fire more than once per phase is under-pointed. It's not that primitive firearms may not be able to move and fire that makes them less valuable, its a modern firearms ability to move, fire, and then fire again at full rate of fire in defensive fire that makes it valuable. So point bumps all round. Cavalry charges also probably need a slight nerf, something along the lines of not being able to insta-rout units more than twice their size.

Also, for display games, units should be uniformly armed.

Overall it was a great experience, but given the cost, the effort that went into getting there, and the stress of effectively going it alone right in the middle of what turned out to be an academically important moment as well as an impending house purchase I cant honestly say it was worth it. I think Salute always inspires me. I look at all the great games and get intoxicated on the atmosphere, and think "I too want to be here" but in all honesty I think I should have reigned in my ambitions and gone to some local shows, at least initially.

Speaking of which, come see and play All That Remains at the Table Top Sale, in Lincombe Barn on the 8th! And possibly Blastastic! in October if I get round to asking the organiser soon.
I love it! combined with Xanders painting, it's a beautiful force.

I've also managed to point it up.

We were slightly worried that the Coalition force would outstrip it in size, but nothing like that has happened. Even stripped down to basically men and equipment, the horde significantly outpoints the coalition. I'm hoping that this will provide an opportunity to fine tune the points values for firearms.

The horde is composed of elite troops. If they don't have the numbers or experience to cross the battlefield without getting cut apart then I know we have a problem.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-47866962330623693092016-04-12T12:00:00.000+01:002016-04-12T12:00:13.003+01:00GubbinsSome of the gubbins for the game.
The road system was made with a wood base covered with sandpaper. I'm not entirely sure the sandpaper was worth it in the end. Up close you can see the effect, but at any sort of distance, it just looks uniformly grey.
The building shells were supplied by Xander to which I applied buckets of poly-filler and tubes of Hobbycraft acrylics. The connecting piece was made out of foam supplied by Xander's partner. I think it fits in rather well.

To this will be added dark age era housing, again courtesy of Xander, some autumnal trees I picked up on the cheap a while back and it will all be mounted on a couple of grass boards loaned by a local gamer king.
I'm a little worried by our lack of linear terrain but if I have time I can panic buy some stone walls, and I've got some cars to weather on the back burner.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-65186597888433916572016-03-30T21:51:00.001+01:002016-03-30T21:51:09.000+01:00Nomad WiP
The WiPs

Sorry. The last few months have been mad... but the nomads (mark I army, pending mammoths at a later date) are getting there. I have another 20 or so part finished in the work bench, but the current plan is to get everything finished by the end of the weekend.
Alas, you won't be seeing me at Salute as I am likely to be moving house that day.
Still, enough of that...

Here is the painted force as it currently stands - 3 squads, a cannon and most of a command squad... still on the paint desk are another squads worth (a bit more multicultural with a few nods and winks on the shield designs ), the warlord, the rest of the command squad and a sniper team...
I've still got plenty of ideas I want to add, even to the first version, but needs must.
It may be a little contextless without the rules themselves, but hopefully it's something of a view into what I'm trying to accomplish here. Please go ahead and have a look. Point up your own post apocalyptic forces!

Salute has put up its list of games and we're on it! This means we have just over a month to get our shizzle together (and I have a stats exam, a paper and a house move to manage into the bargain!)

Luckily, for me at least, stress is a scalpel that cuts away all superfluous activity so hopefully we'll see you all in April with something worthy of Salute (and a photo in Wargames Illustrated maybe?)
The Flying Squad (or, The Lancers) are not a formal part of the Manchester Guard. Early in the city's history a fast mobile unit was put together to counter bandits and generally keep order among outlying settlements. At first this was little more than a posse of well armed busybodies who threw their weight around outside the walls of the citadel. As time went on they developed their own tradition and history but began to deploy regularly alongside or in support of the Guard proper.

Technically any man can join the Flying squad; the only requirements being that he must provide his own horse. In practice this limits membership to rich sons of the Houses or other prosperous individuals. Additionally the use of the male pronoun throughout the Book of Rules, the governing document that describes the responsibilities and privileges of the Flying Squad has been used to limit membership to men only. This reading of the document has been upheld at least once, making this one of the few roles in Manchester from which women are formally barred.

The preponderance of thrill seeking rich among the Flying Squad has, inevitably, created a hostile relationship with the Guard, who know them by a number of insalubrious names. In fact, while their value in providing a visible presence for Manchester's satellite communities is respected by the leaders of Manchester, their actual utility in battle is still debatable. While they commemorate a number of "great victories" their detractors are quick to point out that these were attained against what amounts to disorganised bandits and disgruntled farmers. The armies of the Karn, by comparison, are like nothing they have faced before.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-91586506269768378432016-01-24T12:00:00.000+00:002016-01-24T12:00:12.213+00:00Manchester Guard Weapons TeamHere are some photos of the Guard's HMG, probably the single most potent weapon on our future battlefield (unless you count mammoths...)

I'm reasonably happy with how they turned out in the end. Granted they are the drabbest forces I have ever painted, including my 15mm paras in camo! They don't really scream post apocalyptic either, but that's ok as again, Manchester is supposed to be a visionary re-inventor city state. They have the textile industry to clothe their troops identically and the logistical capacity to standardize their weaponry.

In order to escape the curse of true uniformity, I tried to mix headgear up a little, adding WWII helmets, and - as shown in the forefront in the photo above - a greenstuff sculpted helmet.

I tried adding a little colour in the bases as I've been experimenting wit meadow flowers. They are a bitch to get stuck down, and the solitary bloom I put on the Highland Spring Water Traders has already fallen off. I'm probably applying them incorrectly.

The miniature above will serve as an NCO and probably my command figure for the game, unless I can find the time to put some more HQ figures together.
Here's a photo of the final (entirely) unpainted unit for my forces.

Something tell me they're going to be a royal pain in the ass... It's nagging me...

I can't believe I let Xander bully me into adding mounted forces to the game, and then into adding them to my force, and then giving me some cavalry...
The banner is at a slight angle due to the fact that I don't want to affix it for travelling purposes.

I'm actually very pleased with the way they turned out. At first, I thought the squares on their cloaks were going to drive me insane, but they seem to have paid off.

These men are drawn from among the longer serving members of the "Mud and Bloods" (I'll provide fluff for both Manchester and the Guards soon enough) and keep many of their operating procedures and weapons from before "the reorganisation".

These men are armed with SMG's, while their sergeant has an assault rifle. One of them carries a Rocket Launcher, Single Shot, Disposable, Mammoth, For the purpose of hunting.

Beneath their cloaks they are wearing the "new" uniform of the Manchester Guard. Persistent legend has it that their cloaks are made by, or bought with the last pennies of their wives or sweethearts, and there is even a song to this end, however, this is mostly untrue. While they provide their own cloaks, as with all non-standard issue equipment, they are usually not bought by doomed lovers. Veteran troops are extremely possessive of their signature look, and many regular soldier has got the boot in when innocently trying to emulate them.

While they are the veterans of many battles with raider groups and smaller settlements, they have never faced a foe as large, as experienced or as cohesive as the Karns horde.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-53595810966992367732016-01-02T12:00:00.000+00:002016-01-02T12:00:22.143+00:00Left for Lead

Just a quick picture of the Manchester "line infantry" for lack of a better word.

They're made of half Warlord Commando! half Redoubt enterprises ACW dismounted cavalry. I hope once they're done that they will look like the sort of troops a pre-industrial but wealthy post-apocalyptic city might be able to put together.

I also hope once they're painted that they wont look like:

Normal ACW troops

Normal British or German WWII troops

A bunch of clowns

You cant see them in this picture, but a couple are carrying swords (including the Leadership 0 officer, front right) and the one at the rear right has a motorcycle helmet greenstuffed onto him. I decided quite early that uniformity would be the true dead of the post apocalyptic aesthetic, so while these men are the standing, standardised infantry of a city state, they are still working with post-apocalytic resources and have brought some of their own equipment to the fight.

To be honest, I'm pinning a lot on the paint job. The manner in which I chose to produce they was expensive, time consuming and I cut the tips of my fingers to shreds in the process. While most of my time has been hoovered up by various parties and the 150 pages of prereading that I need to do for my next module, all my spare time is now being dedicated to the ATR project and I can happily report that I have my first unit completed, with the other now completely built and awaiting paint.

Here are some pictures of the Highland Spring Water Clan, otherwise known as the Highland Spring Tranders.
The standard bearer - front and centre - still has to have his banner added. I've made the flag, I just need to get it to a printer. As it turns out, I am simply not good enough to paint intricate design.
The second photo contains some of the "characters" of the group. At the far left is the squads LMG gunner and to his right, with the ornament on his turban is the squads 0 Leadership leader. The figure behind and between the two is the NCO for the Clan detachment.

The Highland Spring Water Clan came together when I envisioned a more post-nuclear setting for our game. They were pulling double duty as a stand in for Clean Water Cartel/Generic civilised wastelanders for Dariwns World. As the setting for our game become more unspecified, generic human die-back their mode of dress became rather odd, but I do have an in-story handwave for that.

In all honesty, I probably should have given these guys a desert wasteland basing, rather than a generic wasteland basing.

Ahem

The Highland Spring Water Clan

Soon after The Fall, the families of the Highland Spring group took refuge at their bottling plant in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The isolated location afforded safety and an abundance of game. It soon came to their attention that there were plenty of concentrations of people without access to sufficient quantities of clean drinking water. Soon they were back in business producing and transporting bottled water. As people learned to deal with the new realities of the world, the bottom quickly fell out of the water market, but by then, the Highland Spring Traders had an established network of contacts and clients and began to trade in other commodities.

Their idiosyncratic mode of dress was established early in their history. During a period they refer to as "The Burning Years" they came to believe that increased solar activity was a major threat - due to whatever reason, global warming, use of nuclear weapons in other parts of the world - and began to dress accordingly. They claim that this threat has now passed, but by then the new style of dress had become cultural. In reality, this paranoia was provoked by a series of nasty sunburns suffered by their children during an unusually cloudless summer in the higher altitudes of the Welsh Mountains.

Membership of the Highland Spring Water Clan is restricted to family members, thus the Clan part of their name. Everyone currently in the Clan is related, at least by marriage to the original families who took shelter in the bottling plant. This proved problematic during their initial expansion as manpower was constantly stretched and resulted in a rash of adult adoptions, arranged marriages and rumoured bride and groom kidnappings. Now the Clan's presence has stabilised, reaching from Manchester to London.

Their northern interests have been severely damaged by the presence of the marauding Northern Nomads and it was the Highland Spring Water Clan that first truly realised the threat posed by these new, powerful raiders, and proposed the idea of a multi faction coalition to the Mayor of Manchester. While they incessantly promote the coalition as a cosmopolitan group, the majority of the forces involved belong to Manchester, with the Clan itself providing a distant second. Unfortunately, the Clans warriors are little more than caravan guards and have never fought anything like a pitched battle. They are desperately unready to face the seasoned raiders of the Karns forces.S Reidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13458100348487687395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422014170478011019.post-63759875007293035922015-10-04T00:40:00.002+01:002015-10-04T00:40:23.933+01:00Lead Poisoning I've put together the four man squad of veteran Manchester infantry.

I think it's fair to say that I have mixed feelings about these figures. I originally bought them off Xander (in fact I think I'm responsible for a significant proportion of his sales). They're apparently Westwind neo-soviets (apart from the 40k Corbec, obviously) and they have issues. From a structural standpoint I had to put brass rods in their feet to get them to stand up. Aesthetically, none of them are holding their weapons by the grips, preferring to hold them by the butt. The guns themselves look ridiculous, like PPSh-41's with delusions of being assault rifles. I clipped the ridiculous bayonets off two of them. All in all they look almost as derpy as that one Across the Dead Earth figure who is in the process of dropping his rifle.

Head wise, I went mostly with the hooded heads that came in the same baggie - I don't know if they're from the same miniatures. It's certainly given them an otherworldly look. Unfortunately that look is "cultist" or "elf ranger" rather than "post apocalyptic SAS". But no matter, they'll do the trick. The third figure got one of the aggressively ugly heads from the Warlord Commandos box. I'm currently sourcing a range of helmets as I think equipping the Manchester regulars exclusively with broddie helmets might make the look a bit Dad's Army.

These may seem like tiny alterations, but for me, it's ground breaking.

I've also managed to put 6 of my line infantry together, using up all the ACW torsos I got. They are taking several hours each, but I think the end result is worth it. These guys are definitely looking like they could be produced by a PA city. But more on them when I have the whole unit finished.
